Since 1989, Mary Tom, Esq. has been admitted to the practice of law in the States of New Jersey and New York. Ms. Tom was also admitted in 1989 to the bar of the District of Columbia. She is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey and the United States Tax Court.
Ms. Tom earned her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Manhattanville College in 1985 and her Law Degree from Seton Hall University – School of Law in Newark, New Jersey in 1988. Ms. Tom served as President of Phi Alpha Delta Fraternity Chapter at Seton Hall Law School. She also participated in the Moot Court program and interned for the Law School’s Legal Services Clinic while a third year law student.
Upon her graduation from Seton Hall Law, Ms. Tom served a one-year judicial clerkship for the Honorable Amos C. Saunders in Passaic County. After her clerkship ended, she began working with Michael J. Sweeney, Esq., with whom she has been affiliated since 1989. In January 2001, Ms. Tom became a shareholder of that practice.
In July 2006, Ms. Tom and her partners merged with Hunziker, Jones, Champion & Romer. The new firm became one of the largest practices in Passaic County. While with the firm, her areas of concentration were in elder law and family law primarily.
Ms. Tom maintains an extremely diversified practice. Ms. Tom’s elder law/estate practice involves numerous aspects of estate administration, litigation, and estate planning. She has also developed a Guardianship practice component to her elder law practice, in which Ms. Tom has served, and continues to serve as the Court-appointed Guardian for several wards over the years. In those fiduciary capacities, Ms. Tom acts as the guardian of the ward’s person and/or property, been directly accountable to the Court.
Since 2000, Ms. Tom has served as a Trustee of the Passaic County Bar Association. She is also the Co-Chair off the Passaic County Bar Association, Elder Law Section. Ms. Tom is also a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.
